When Yvonne Stein joined Medina Healthcare System in 1976, healthcare looked very different than it does today. Over the next five decades, she would witness remarkable changes in medicine while becoming a constant source of compassion, leadership, and dedication for patients and colleagues alike.

This year, Medina Healthcare System proudly celebrates Yvonne's extraordinary milestone of 50 years of service—a career that has helped shape the Surgery Department, touched countless lives, and left a lasting impact on generations of nurses.

"I wanted to become a nurse because I wanted to work with people," Yvonne said. "I enjoyed biology, and I knew nursing was a career that would always allow me to find a job, no matter where I lived."

That decision grew into a career marked by service, leadership, and a willingness to do whatever was needed.

Throughout her career, Yvonne became a cornerstone of the Surgery Department. During her 34 years as Operating Room Manager, she led the department through a major renovation and oversaw the equipping of the three operating rooms still in use today.

Working in a rural hospital also meant wearing many hats. In addition to her nursing responsibilities, Yvonne performed X-rays, conducted laboratory testing, ordered medical supplies, and taught in Medina Healthcare System's Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) education program. Whether caring for patients, supporting coworkers, or filling whatever role the day required, she approached every responsibility with the same quiet dedication.

Over the years, she watched healthcare transform. She remembers a time when she and two nurse aides cared for the entire hospital during the evening shift, long before today's staffing models and specialized departments. She also witnessed surgery evolve from traditional open procedures to minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques that have dramatically improved patient care.

Despite those advances, Yvonne says the heart of nursing has never changed. The greatest reward has always been helping patients through difficult moments and seeing them recover.

When asked what accomplishment she is most proud of after 50 years, her answer had nothing to do with titles or recognition.

"I'm most proud of the nurses I've trained over the years."

That answer comes as no surprise to those who have worked alongside her.

"Yvonne has been wonderful to work with," said Yvette Proctor, Director of Surgery. "I believe her legacy will be her role as a mentor—passing down her knowledge, experience, and values to the next generation of nurses. She exemplifies the true meaning of dedication and loyalty, qualities that have left a lasting impact on our department."

For nurses just beginning their careers, Yvonne offers simple advice that reflects the perspective gained through five decades of caring for others.

"Ride the waves," she said. "No matter where you work, there will always be ups and downs. Focus on what you can do to solve problems instead of placing blame."

Reflecting on Yvonne's remarkable milestone, CEO Billie Bell shared her appreciation for a career that has made a lasting difference.

"Yvonne's fifty years of service reflect a level of dedication that is rare in any profession. Her steadiness, her care for patients, and the pride she takes in her work have shaped this hospital for decades. We are better because of her, and it's a privilege to recognize a career that has meant so much to so many."

Fifty years is an extraordinary achievement, but Yvonne's legacy is measured by far more than the number of years she has served. It lives on in the patients she has cared for, the colleagues she has supported, and the nurses she has mentored throughout her career.
